What is Sodium phosphate tribasic?
Sodium Phosphate Tribasic is a colourless crystal with a relative density of 1.62. When heated to 100°C, it loses its crystal water and becomes anhydrous. In an aqueous solution, it tends to decompose into disodium hydrogen phosphate and sodium hydroxide, resulting in an alkaline solution. It can cause skin irritation and is not soluble in ethanol and carbon disulphide.
The production of Sodium Phosphate Tribasic involves the neutralization of phosphoric acid using sodium carbonate, which produces disodium hydrogen phosphate. The disodium hydrogen phosphate is then reacted with sodium hydroxide to form trisodium phosphate and water.
The neutralization process involves diluting food-grade phosphoric acid with deionized water to a specific concentration. The diluted solution is then added to a stirred reactor, and food-grade caustic soda solution is slowly added to neutralize the reaction. The Na/P ratio is adjusted to a range of 3.24 to 3.26. The solution is purified by using a bleaching agent to remove heavy metal and arsenic contaminants. Impurities are removed through filtration. The solution is then cooled, crystallized, and subjected to centrifugal separation. The resulting filter liquor is dried to obtain the final product: Sodium Phosphate Tribasic.
